The controversial mascots of Quizno’s, the Spongmonkeys, are reportedly making a comeback after being unceremoniously retired in 2005.

The Spongmonkeys return, are in alignment with a new ad campaign that’s being rolled out as part of a reboot of Quizno’s, and it’s image, that will include opening up “dozens more locations” that will focus on a new dining experience.

The Spongmonkeys are already starring in a new commercial that has them singing in their memorably, bleating manner “We are back”.

The notorious mascots, are a two-part ensemble of part shrieking rat, part demonic genetic mutation, that were originally created in the early 2000’s.

They sang, and strummed their way through songs with little hat accessories, and the like, while promoting Quizno’s subs with a vigor.

The Spongmonkeys have famously been confusing consumers since their inception, being reviled, and lauded at once. And that confusion is what makes them so catchy. They’re not cookie cutter mascots, and they don’t aim to be.

“The Spongmonkeys were last seen in 2005, when they were loved and hated in roughly equal measure,” CEO Tim Casey said in the statement. “The return of the brand’s most famous mascots, the Spongmonkeys, marks the resurgence of Quiznos.”

Quizno’s website welcomes back the Spongmonkeys in a big way, and even attempts to explain why “we lost out way”.

“I didn’t expect Quiznos to get back in touch, but I was so pleased they did,” Veitch (creator of the Spongmonkeys) explained in a recent interview with Eater. “I was over the moon. My experience of the mayhem that was making these commercials originally was just unbridled joy. Really, really good fun. And I’ve enjoyed the way that they’ve continued to have a life afterward.”

Arguably, the Spongmonkeys are some of the scariest, creepiest, most bizarre (what have you) mascots of all time but are they enough to pull Quizno’s out of the muck that they seem to have been stuck in?
