A recent study conducted by the market research company OnePoll for Dutch Bros, found some interesting habits in regards to fast food restaurants, and going to the store.

The study polled 2000 adults and found that 47% of people would go out of their way to avoid a store or fast food restaurant that didn’t have a drive-thru.

When comparing going through the drive-thru with going inside a store physically – 28% would use the drive-thru and only 14% would go inside.

Another weird conclusion of the study found that those who use the drive-thru (63%) are more likely to have an extroverted personality, and those that prefer to go inside (43%) are…introverted.

A most unusual and ironic conclusion, considering ‘going inside’ requires more effort and energy than placing an order from a car.

The overall preference to use the drive-thru rides on convenience, avoiding long lines, and the comfort of staying in the car.

Charles Swindler, the Vice President of Dutch Bros commented on the results, “Drive-thrus can be intimidating when you’re not familiar with the place.”

Vehicles line up at the drive thru at a Chick-fil-A.

Other Interesting Drive-thru Conclusions

  • Most people are likely to use a drive-thru between 8am and 12pm
  • 63% and 60% of people polled most commonly used the drive-thru for coffee and fast food
  • 27% of Coffee-drinkers wish the drive-thru was open past midnight
  • 68% of people judge the quality of a store by the drive-thru’s appearance
  • 44% skip the chain entirely when the drive-thru looks boring

Last week, we found another study that found the healthiest burger in the nation. The surprising and controversial pick was Whataburger. Many social media users balked, anns claimed the results must be because the chain’s burger is the ‘least delicious’.
