Georgia native, Joann Oliver is being lauded for her integrity and honesty after she found a wad of cash totaling $543.10 underneath her sandwich from KFC.
Oliver hasn’t had an easy go of it – her husband, battling cancer and suffering from multiple strokes, has an estimated $2 million in medical debt.
The medical and financial crisis that she and her family have found themselves in, makes the phrase “hard times” sound like child’s play.
Oliver found herself on lunch break this past Tuesday, with a gas tank “sitting on E” as she went through KFC’s drive-thru, ordered her lunch, and brought it back to work with her.
The weight of her KFC bag seemed off, suspiciously heavier than normal.
As she reached in to recover her food, a shock of green caught her eye.
Underneath her sandwich was a nesting wad of cold, hard cash.
A lesser man (or woman) would have maybe, jumped up and did a jig but Joanne kept her composure and got to counting.
“I started counting it and when I got to $500, I stopped and just put it back in the envelope, closed the envelope put the sandwich back the way I got it and just slid it to the side until the officer got here,” Oliver said.
Before Joann called the police, she had a brief fantasy:
“For a second. We thought about going shopping” said Oliver. “I said I should have kept a 20 because I’m sitting on E.”
Police were able to ascertain that the money was destined for a daily deposit to be made by the manager but that it somehow ended up in Joanne’s order Jackson Police Department released a statement on Facebook, praising Joanne: “Not only did Mrs. Oliver do the right thing, but she saved the manager’s job,” it continued. “Mrs. Oliver, thank you for reminding us that we have amazing citizens in Jackson, and it’s people like you that make us great!” (Via: msn.com)
“If you don’t do the right thing it’s gonna come back on you,” Oliver said. “I mean It wasn’t mine. I didn’t need to keep it. I’ll get mine in the future.”
KFC ended up recouping Oliver for her money laden lunch and gave her a free meal.
No one would have been the wiser if Joanne had kept the loot, filled her gas tank, and went on a shopping spree that day but Joanne’s character didn’t allow such a scenario.
Hopefully her good deed will come back to her ten-fold, and in the form of something more than just a free meal at KFC.
