Taco Bell’s menu is a constant dance of innovation and elimination. New creations arrive with fanfare, while beloved classics sometimes fade away. Here’s a look at some of the discontinued items that hold a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many fans:
Chili Cheese Burritos or Chillitos (Early 1990’s):
The introduction of the legenday Chili Cheese Burrito came about in the early ’90’s when it was added to Taco Bell’s budget menu. It reigned for a few years and was dropped from the menu nationwide.
It still existed in select locations but not enough to keep fans happy as several petitions have been created over the years to bring it back. In 2022, it did return…but again, only to certain areas.
Loaded Grillers (2000s): These were like portable, cheesy burritos wrapped in a griddled flatbread. Popular varieties included the Loaded Potato Griller and the Beefy Nacho Griller.
7-Layer Burrito (1988-2016): This vegetarian option was a legend for its simplicity and flavor. Packed with ingredients like refried beans, rice, cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes, it was a satisfying and affordable choice.
Meximelt (1988-2019): A warm hug on a plate, the Meximelt was a cheesy masterpiece featuring a ground beef patty nestled between two warm tortillas, smothered in nacho cheese sauce and served with diced tomatoes and onions.
Caramel Apple Empanada (2004-2019): This sweet treat was a departure from savory items, but no less beloved. The crispy fried shell held a warm, gooey caramel apple filling, perfect for satisfying a post-taco sugar craving.
The Enchirito (1970s-2011): This cheesy enchilada-burrito hybrid was a true original. Filled with seasoned beef, beans, and cheese, it was drenched in red sauce and topped with melted cheddar cheese.
Double Decker Taco (1995-2006): This double-shelled masterpiece offered twice the amount of taco goodness. A hard shell cradled a soft shell, both filled with seasoned beef, lettuce, cheese, and tomatoes.
Black Jack Taco (1990s): This mysterious menu item featured a black bean patty seasoned with bold spices. While not for everyone, it offered a unique vegetarian option.
Volcano Taco & Lava Sauce (2013-2015): This fiery offering brought the heat with a spicy volcano sauce drizzled over a seasoned beef taco. The short-lived lava sauce remains a legend for fans of bold flavors.
Big Taste Tacos: These short-lived tacos arrived in the early 2000s with a focus on bold flavors and premium ingredients. They came in a few varieties, including the Big Steak Taco and the Big Baja Taco.
These are just a few of the many discontinued Taco Bell items that continue to hold a special place in our fast-food nostalgia. Who knows, maybe one day they’ll make a return!
