Chick-fil-A, just announced a change to its long-standing policy regarding antibiotics in its chicken. For the past five years, the fast food chain boasted a “No Antibiotics Ever” (NAE) pledge, meaning no antibiotics of any kind used throughout the chicken’s life cycle.

Now the chain is backtracking on the policy, citing sourcing issues, and Chick-fil-A will pivot their stance once more to using some antibiotics… a “No Antibiotics Important to Human Medicine” (NAIHM) approach.

In 2019, the chain had shifted to 100% antibiotic free chicken. Under the new policy, being implemented in spring 2024, Chick-fil-A’s chicken suppliers can use antibiotics specifically designed for animals to treat sick birds. This differs from the NAE approach, which completely eliminated all antibiotic use, even for preventative reasons

According to an update on Chick-Fil-A’s website on Thursday:To maintain supply of the high-quality chicken you expect from us, Chick-fil-A will shift from No Antibiotics Ever (NAE) to No Antibiotics Important To Human Medicine (NAIHM) starting in the Spring of 2024.”

The company claims the shift is necessary to maintain a consistent supply of high-quality chicken. They emphasize that NAIHM still promotes responsible antibiotic use and prioritizes animal well-being.

Chick-Fil-A’s statement continued:In accordance with FDA requirements, all antibiotics must be cleared from the chicken’s system before it is considered available for the chicken supply.  The United States Department of Agriculture audits and verifies that suppliers are meeting the requirements of the Chick-fil-A NAIHM commitment.”

Some praise Chick-fil-A’s commitment to animal health by allowing treatment for sick chickens. Others express concern that any antibiotic use in livestock contributes to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance, a public health threat.

To recap:

  • NAE to NAIHM: Chick-fil-A will no longer uphold its “No Antibiotics Ever” pledge.
  • Treatment for Sick Birds: Antibiotics designed for animals can be used to treat illnesses in the chicken flocks.
  • Concerns About Resistance: The change raises concerns about antibiotic resistance, a potential public health risk.

The chain explained more on why they’re changing their tune: “As we looked to the future, the availability of high-quality chicken that meets our rigid standards became a concern. This change enables us to not only ensure we can continue to serve high-quality chicken, but also chicken that still meets the expectations our customers count on us to deliver.”

What do you think, does this affect Chick-fil-A’s reputation?
