A Reddit user posted a video of a 20 yard dumpster filled to the top with boxes upon boxes of Krispy Kreme Donuts. The video captured a swarm of bees going to town on the cache.
The video was shared to the subreddit “Interesting As F***“, and received over 18,000 upvotes generating a lot of discussion as to why there were so many donuts in the dumpster located in Texas.
The sound of the bees glomming on the donuts can be heard in the 32 second clip where an army of them were trying to squire sugar from the unopened boxes.
The original source of the video had been shared by u/meltedwhisky on a beekeeping subreddit, by Matt, who captioned it:
“Dumpster full of Krispy Kreme’s ~ I had to stop and open boxes for them.”
Newsweek spoke to Matt who told them that he’s a third generation beekeeper: “Subconsciously while driving, I am looking for black clouds of bees that can be a swarm to capture.”
While out and about, Matt had stumbled upon the dumpster filled with bees and the mega-load of Krispy Kreme.
He explained that due to the lack of rain this past summer, the bees hadn’t had a consistent source of honey and going into the fall season – the bees are setting themselves up for coming winter.
Matt, the beekeeper got to work by opening over one hundred boxes of the expired donuts so the bees could access the sugar.
Comments on both sub-reddits were appalled at the huge amount of food wastage, many questioning why the donuts couldn’t go to a homeless shelter or employees.
At least the donuts weren’t a complete waste, the bees were able to get to the sugar (with the help of Matt) so they could bring it back to their hive and live off it for the cold months ahead.
For the Krispy Kreme lover in all of us – the sight of the donuts in the dumpster would’ve been like finding pirate’s booty.
