In a recent video, former McDonald’s corporate chef Mike Haracz shed light on the fast-food giant’s decision to discontinue its popular Dollar Menu and why the $5 Menu Deal isn’t a good idea for the chain.

He uploaded the video onTikTok, titled ‘Former McDonald’s chef talks about their value plans’ and went off the points

Haracz, who worked with the fast food heavyweight until 2019, explained the primary reason behind the menu’s demise was the rising cost of ingredients and labor.

While the Dollar Menu may be a distant memory, McDonald’s has introduced other value-oriented offerings, such as the $5 Meal Deal. This deal provides customers with a choice of entrees (a McDouble or McChicken, a 4-piece McNugget, and a small drink) for a fixed price of $5.

Last week, the chain announced adding more McValue and keeping the meal deal around for the foreseeable future and makin the decision to heavily promote more value on the heels of the E.coli outbreak to win back customers trust.

The new deals are being called “McValue” and while it’s not a menu per se, they’re available through the app – it has various buy one get one for $1 options and buy one get one free deals:

  • $5 Meal Deal continuation: This popular offering, which includes a choice of a McDouble or McChicken sandwich, four-piece Chicken McNuggets, small fries, and a small drink, will continue to be available.
  • Buy One, Add One for $1: This new deal will allow customers to add a second item to their order for just $1, such as a Sausage McMuffin, 6-piece Chicken McNuggets, or a Double Cheeseburger.
  • Breakfast Buy One Get One: Sausage McMuffin®
  • Sausage Biscuit
  • Sausage Burrito
  • Hash Browns
  • McValue Lunch/Dinner Buy One:
  • 6-pc. Chicken McNuggets®
  • Double Cheeseburger
  • McChicken®
  • Small Fries
  • Local and Digital Offers: McDonald’s will also offer a range of local and digital deals, providing flexibility and customization for customers.

Haracz continued discussing the dollar menu and why McDonald’s won’t bring it back: ‘[McDonald’s] wants to increase the average check of people ordering food. They want people coming into the restaurant and ordering a lot of things on the check – not just dollar menu items where they make the least amount of profits. They would rather [offer] “buy one little more premium item, get another one for a dollar” or the $5 bundle meals because more people that would come in and order the $1 items would just make the drive-thru lines extra long.”

“…even though that’s what folks want, McDonald’s is in the position to try to optimize things in the restaurant. They would rather do buy one a little more premium item, get another one for a dollar, or the $5 dollar bundle meals.”

He continued, “More people that would come in and order the one dollar thing would just make the drive-through lines extra long and they want to increase the average check of people ordering food. He added that McDonald’s, “will always and will only do things that are operationally easy for them to do.”
