Workers at a KFC in Texas were subjected to racist phone calls after a sign posted the night before advertising KFC’s Kentucky Fried Nuggets conveyed a disturbing message.

According to the police report and Everything Lubbock, the sign displayed racially “appalling” messages and enraged the local population to the point that they were calling the KFC and threatening them with racist slurs.

Before closing for the night, a KFC worker went outside to change the changeable letter display sign outside to, “try our new nuggets.”

Sign changes from ‘nuggets’ for sale to…n***** for sale overnight

The next morning, the phone started ringing off the hook with callers using racially charged language and calling KFC workers’ names. She said that one phone call asked if they, “were selling “n*****s.”

At one point, a customer told the workers that the marquee sign advertising the Kentucky Nuggets had been vandalized and now read, “n***** on sale for 2 cents.”

After taking down the changeable letters, a KFC employee reported the incident to police. It was noted that the changeable letters didn’t match their own letters, which meant they came from another location.

KFC issued a statement condemning the act and called it an act of hate: “Overnight on April 4th the sign at a local KFC restaurant was vandalized with an appalling message. This is an act of hate through vandalism. After discovering the sign had been vandalized and the letters had been changed overnight, the local restaurant team immediately changed the sign and contacted the police. Hate has no place at any KFC.
