A woman got a nasty surprise from Pizza Hut after ordering a pizza from the chain, and discovering what she thought was a piece of sweetcorn. Unfortunately for her…it wasn’t.
Sophie Fruen, and her boyfriend Jay Kendall ordered a chicken, mushroom, onion, and sweetcorn pizza on November 11th. They took the as-yet-to-be-discovered tainted pizza home where she, along with her boyfriend, and 10-year old sister started eating it.
After a few bites, Fruen felt something off inside her mouth. Thinking it was one of her ordered toppings, the sweetcorn…she investigated the uninvited guest and found what looked to be a bitten off fingernail.
“I’d already eaten one slice of pizza. While I was chewing the second slice of pizza it was crunchy. At first I thought it was a piece of crispy sweetcorn or onion until I spat it out.”
It wasn’t to be confused with anything but a bitten off fingernail. How the fingernail came to be in the pizza is anyone’s guess.
She continued:
‘It was the whole top of a nail. I’m pretty sure someone bit it off because there were tiny breaks in the nail. It made me feel sick and then I didn’t want to eat the rest of my pizza.’
After the discovery she made multiple phone calls to the Pizza Hut that made their order. After no one picked up, Fruen and her boyfriend decided to take the pizza, and accompanying fingernail back to the location to show workers the unwanted surprise.
‘I was with my sister in the car so my boyfriend took it in. There was a lady behind the counter who was really mortified, she went and got a manager.”
He was given two options, a refund or the pizza would be remade. After Kendall said “both”, he was told he could only choose one option and given a replacement pizza.
“I had a good look at the replacement pizza because I didn’t really want to be eating another fingernail. It put me off, I didn’t really want to eat it.”
Ms Fruen said: ‘I don’t even think it would be bad if it was a hair because hair obviously can come out all the time, you can’t really help that. But the fact that that’s somebody’s fingernail and someone’s physically bitten that [is bad]. Even if someone’s nail had broken off, you know when your nail’s snapped off. You’d say to someone “we need to bin the rest of this dough, I’ve broken a nail”.

The situation left a bad taste in her mouth to say the least, and she said that likely, going back to Domino’s would be off the table. She and her family would regularly buy a meal from Domino’s every week.
Domino’s responded for comment saying:
‘Great-tasting, quality pizza is what we pride ourselves on and all our food goes through a strict, thorough quality check before it is sent out to customers. We have contacted this customer and offered a full refund and replacement pizza to make up for them not being able to enjoy their Domino’s on this occasion.’
Unfortunately these kinds of tales are not few and far between, there have been many instances of disgusting happenings in fast food, namely creatures and bugs finding their way into food…
