Arby’s has brought back its popular Crispy Fish Sandwich for the 2024 Lenten season. This crispy-fried Alaskan pollock fillet, topped with shredded lettuce and tartar sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun, has become a fan favorite since its initial introduction in 2020.

The Crispy Fish Sandwich will be available at a price point of $4.79 and in three different versions:

  • Crispy Fish Sandwich – This seasonal fast food item is made with a crispy fish fillet, tartar sauce, and shredded lettuce, all served on a toasted sesame bun. Available for $4.79.
  • Fish ‘n Cheddar Sandwich – For a more flavorful option, consider this sandwich. It features a crispy fish fillet, shredded lettuce, cheddar cheese sauce, and tartar sauce on a seeded bun. Available for $5.09.
  • King’s Hawaiian Fish Deluxe Sandwich –Lightly toasted King’s Hawaiian roll, with layers of crispy fish fillet, shredded lettuce, tomato, tartar sauce, and cheddar cheese. $5.59.

The Fish Sandwich in Fast Food History

But the story of fish sandwiches in fast food goes back much further.

  • Early Days: While not the first fast-food chain to offer fish, McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish, introduced in 1962, is arguably the most iconic. This simple yet effective sandwich, with its steamed fish patty, tartar sauce, and cheese on a steamed bun, has become a staple for many.
  • The Fried Fish Boom: In the 1970s and 80s, fried fish sandwiches gained popularity, with chains like Long John Silver’s and Captain D’s specializing in seafood. These restaurants offered a variety of fried fish options, from cod to shrimp, often served with french fries and coleslaw.
  • Variety and Innovation: Today, fast-food fish sandwiches come in many forms. From spicy offerings like Popeyes’ Louisiana Kitchen’s famous chicken sandwich to unique twists like Wendy’s premium cod fillet, there’s something for everyone.

Why the Comeback?

The return of Arby’s Crispy Fish Sandwich coincides with the Lenten season, a time when many people choose to abstain from meat. This makes it an ideal time for fast-food chains to offer fish options.
