Taco Bell and other fast food chains have expressed the desire to ditch cash, and move to all-digital or electronic transactions only as the accepted form of payment in the near future.

You know the phrase cash is king? Not so at some fast food restaurants.

Yum! Brands, the parent company of several fast food chains like, Pizza Hut, and KFC recently had an earnings call and discussed the possibility of switching to exclusively to using digital-only payments.

Although Yum! didn’t provide a date for the switch, the writing seems to be on the wall.

CFO, Chris Turner detailed the plan to go digital, and said that he wants “one part of all customer transactions to have a digital component.” He likely means using the kiosk, app, or website to place, and pay for orders.

Not everyone is readily adopting apps to place orders and/or paying for their meals with the app.

The plan raises many questions on how it would work, and who it would exclude from visiting the chains for food.

It certainly seems odd to block a sub-set of customers that prefer cash, or haven’t (or won’t) evolve with the digital-era of apps, and delivery platforms.

And some customers don’t have access to ‘plastic’ or digital as payment methods.

The whole point of fast food is the convenience, and this seems like an anti-convienant move ironically enough.

Redditors on r/Taco Bell discussed the news, with many not warming up to the idea.

Some places have already gone cashless, even Shanghai China, where Taco Bell has been laying down the digital-only law.

It looks like the idea is here to stay, the only question is…when will it be enforced?
