KFC Japan is taking cheese to a whole new level by releasing what they’re calling Molten Cheese Pies.
The Molten Cheese Pies are reminiscent of the sweet pastry…fruit, or cream-filled pies of chains like McDonalds, and Popeyes but the difference here is that this one contains a savory filling, with a savory, melty taste. Think hot pocket with a cacophony of cheeses tucked inside.
Molten Cheese Pies
The handheld pie is filled entirely with…cheese enfolded in a flaky, pastry-style crust. It contains three kinds of cheeses – cheddar, cream cheese, and camembert cheese.
It costs about $2.01 USD for one pie. And the Molten Cheese Pies are available in Japan for a limited-time.
The pies aren’t the only item new to KFC Japan…the chain is bringing another cheesy friend along for the ride, the Cheese Drenched Chicken Sandwich. The chicken sandwich uses five different cheeses; cheddar, cream cheese, Gouda, Emmental cheese, Parmesan, and a Black Pepper Cheese Sauce.
It has a fried chicken filet, and a toasted bun to contain all that cheesy goodness. The price is listed at a reasonable, 490 yen or $3.39 USD.
Pastry pies, or sweet-filled desserts have been a staple at various fast food chains for years. McDonald’s popular Baked Apple Pie which has been on the menu since 1968. For the Holiday season, the chain came out with the Holiday Pie featuring a filling of custard and a buttery crust with a dusting of sugar, and colorful sprinkles on the exterior.
And Popeyes brought out their own seasonal pie for the holidays. The Blueberry Lemon Cream Cheese Fried Pie. This one merges several sweet components for a super indulgent dessert option.
In a similar vein as the Molten Cheese Pie, Taco Bell is testing the handheld, Cheesy Chicken Crispanada in Knoxville TN. It also features a crispy, pastry exterior and a cheesy inside but uses the addition of chicken for a more substantial option. It’s currently in the testing phase with no word on when or if it will be going nationwide.
