An anonymous do-gooder, (he requested to remain unnamed), spent a night camped out in the parking lot of a newly opening Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, all for a chance to win the fast-food chain’s year-long supply of chicken. And his sights were set on a noble goal…to donate some of the winnings (the chicken) to a local homeless shelter.
He spoke about why he would go to such lengths to win the free chicken:
“I saw the contest and knew I had to do something. There are so many people out there who are struggling to put food on the table. If I could win this chicken, I knew it could make a real difference at the shelter.“
The Popeyes was set for its grand opening at 11am the next day in Greater Manchester, UK when he rolled up after work armed with a blanket, pillows, and a laptop to park for 17 hours and a chance to win free chicken for a year. The first three people in line for the locations big opening day would get the prize.
He continued: “I knew I was going to win this. I’m not here to play games. They told me I’ve broken a record for the longest wait. I’ve actually had a full eight hour’s sleep, I’ve got heated seats in my car, I’ve been working from here and I’m just living the dream really.”
Originally from Kenya, the Popeye’s hero said he travels back home frequently to help out in his hometown:
“I go back home a lot and help out families with villages, I try to do as much as I can to help others out. It’s the least I can do. Thank all glory to God, I can afford food, I can afford a car, so if I can help others out, why not?”
He added:
“It’s not just because it’s free food but, apart from eating Popeyes here and there, I can help feed some of the local homeless with it.”
News outlets picked up the heartwarming narrative of the anonymous do-gooder who saw a fast food prize to be the perfect opportunity to do a charitable deed.
He’s no fool though, he will also be partaking in eating some of his prize chicken but he says:
“Genuinely, if I don’t want to have the food, I can just stack the free sandwiches up over a month and give them out to the homeless across the city. As a citizen of Manchester, and a citizen of the UK, I feel like I need to help people out when I can. Why not, innit?“
