McDonald’s has confirmed that all locations will have the anticipated burger makeover (of 50+ changes) go into effect by early 2024 at the latest.

In case you haven’t heard the news, McDonald’s first announced major changes coming to their burgers last Spring. During 2023 they tested a total of 50+ changes to the Big Mac and every burger on the menu but only in Australia, and West coast locations in the US at the time.

In early December, the nature of the changes were revealed which included exchanging the current beef patty, for a juicier beef patty…an upgrade that has been 7 years in the works. Chef Chad Shafer compared the old burger to the new saying:

One is hotter. It looks meltier. Look at how my fingers sink into the bun. Smell it and you smell a big difference. This one, it’s kind of dry. It cracks. And this is the best-case example at headquarters.”

The Changes Coming to McDonald’s Burgers Include:

  • More sauce on Big Macs
  • Meltier cheese
  • Fresher lettuce and pickles
  • Six patties will be grilled at a time
  • Brioche buns will be sliced with a thicker bottom
  • Onions will be rehydrated after purchase
  • Sesame seeds will be further spaced out
  • Softer, more pillowy buns

McDonald’s also recently announced that they’re working on making not only “bigger” burgers…but cheaper burgers as well.

We’ve listened to our customers. And we understand their desire for larger, high-quality burgers that fill you up, and are delivered in a convenient and affordable way.”

The chain will test several versions of a bigger, cheaper burger in limited markets before choosing the one to take nationwide. They haven’t given a date or location on where the bigger burgers will be testing yet…

Chris Young, McDonald’s senior director of global menu strategy, told The Wall Street Journal:

“We can do it quick, fast and safe, but it doesn’t necessarily taste great. So, we want to incorporate quality into where we’re at.”

As for now, the burger makeover will be implemented by February across the country. Some customers that have already seen the new changes incorporated… aren’t happy. The common complaints being heard on social media are that the patties are “thin”, and have numerous “holes” in them, changing the Big Mac bun is preposterous, and many gripes about the rehydrated onions. It looks like we’ll all be finding out for ourselves shortly, just how good (or bad) the burger makeover really is…
