McDonalds is ditching the iconic plastic McFlurry Spoon in favor of a “smaller black spoon” which is said to use less plastic.
Customers have long wondered what exactly that hollow end was all about, even thinking it doubled as a straw.
For thirty years the McFlurry Spoon has both assisted and confused customers while being the go-to McFlurry eating utensil. The hollow end of the spoon is actually a “spindle” which is used for connecting to the ice cream machine to mix toppings into the ice cream.
This change eliminates the need for the spindle end of the spoon as McDonalds will be switching to a reusable spindle that gets swapped out and cleaned after the mixing of each McFlurry.
With the new spindles in place, McDonalds will be giving customers a small, black plastic spoon.
In a statement from McDonalds, they said the: “small change will help reduce single-use plastic waste” without altering how the McFlurry tastes.”
An employee posted to Reddit calling out the move for ostensibly creating “more” plastic waste than the classic McFlurry Spoon. A pamphlet distributed by McDonalds to all employees shows a new black plastic spoon that comes…wrapped in plastic.
“Now we have to serve wrapped spoons with McFlurries in [the] name of ‘Saving the environment’ … come on.”
McDonalds is also getting rid of another customer favorite, the self-serve soda fountain. The chain has plans to completely do away with the concept by 2032 but is already ahead of that target date having removed the fountains in many locations.
