McDonald’s has announced a temporary halt to the sale of espresso-based beverages at some of its U.S. locations due to a safety issue identified with the espresso machine and espresso-based drinks, including macchiatos and Americanos.
The fast-food giant made the decision after receiving a notice from Melitta, the manufacturer of the affected machines. Melitta had recommended a temporary stop to the use of the machines “to proactively ensure safety.”
This development comes as the chain was granted a right to repair their constantly broken down ice cream machines using third parties to not be wholly reliant on the manufacturer’s technicians.
The United States Copyright Office granted the exemption in late October.
While McDonald’s is working closely with Melitta to investigate the issue and develop a solution, the exact nature of the safety concern has not been disclosed.
Melitta said it has “recommended a temporary stop use for the affected customers” while it conducts an investigation. Our intent is to determine the root cause and provide a remediation plan that allows us to move forward.
As a result of this temporary pause, customers may not be able to order popular espresso-based drinks such as lattes, cappuccinos, and macchiatos at affected locations. McDonald’s says they will continue to offer other beverage options, including brewed coffee and iced tea.
In a statement released by McDonald’s they said:
“We have moved quickly to decommission these machines in McDonald’s restaurants an are staying in contact with our supplier to resolve the issue. We are still determining the scope of the impact.”
This latest issue is also on top of the chain’s recovery from the E.coli outbreak that hit in October. The chain is currently directing their efforts towards winning back their customers trust, pouring millions into a marketing campaign to bring customers back on board.
The company says they’re working to address the issue and restore the availability of espresso drinks as soon as possible. Customers are advised to check with their local McDonald’s for the latest updates on beverage availability.
