A sign of the times is the price of a Subway footlong sub these days. Users on TikTok shared their thoughts on the steep prices for a Subway sandwich in the viral video.

It’s hard to conjure the phrase Subway footlong and not place the ‘$5’ in front of it while singing in the infamous melody from the ubiquitous Subway commercials of a time, long past.

It was so catchy and marketed around the clock that $5 and footlong went together like peanut butter and jelly.

TikToker, @chiefgyk3d made a video recently after he went to a Subway and found out the hard way…just how high the prices had risen on the foot long subs (The Daily Dot first reported on the matter).

If you want to know how bad inflation is…go to a Subway. Go look at how much the cost is for a footlong tuna. And remember a few years ago when we were children as millennials…it was a $5 foot long.”

Indeed many agreed that the prices are getting exorbitant for the quality of food that they’re paying for…

I literally went there today got two combos $34 I was like are you serious. “

i went to subway today. Turkey Cali Club said 11.99 on the board for a foot long. The actual price was 16.99…wtf.”

If you were conscious during the 2010’s…finding out how high the price for a foot long is now can be a little mind-blowing.

And just how long has the $5 footlong been off the table?

Well, it first became a promotion in 2008 right before the bottom dropped out of the economy and, lasted for quite a while once it became a big hit.

Do you remember the jingle?

But word on the street is that franchisees were losing money on the deal.

Depending on who you ask and the franchisees involved, the promotion started being phased out in 2012. It still lived on at some locations in 2016 and even 2018 when it was brought back for a limited time.

The price was then raised to $6 and is also a thing of the past.

Most of the younger generation doesn’t even remember the $5 footlong promotion.

How would I know that a shitty sandwich used to cost $5?” Said one stupefied Tiktoker.

Regardless of what the price is now, “$5 dollar Footlonggggg” sounds so much better (and cheaper) than the $11.49 or $16.99 footlongggg.
