For years, a quiet but passionate contingent of fast-food lovers has held a torch for a simple, golden-brown delight: Arby’s Potato Cakes. These crispy, shredded potato patties, a nostalgic staple for many, have been on and off the Arby’s menu like a fickle flame. But now, it seems the whispers have turned into a roar, and Arby’s is finally listening. Are Potato Cakes truly here to stay?

The saga of the Potato Cake is one of yearning and fleeting reunions. They’ve been a beloved side, a breakfast option, and a comforting snack, only to disappear, leaving a gaping hole in the hearts (and stomachs) of their devotees. Social media has been a battleground for Potato Cake enthusiasts, with petitions, pleas, and nostalgic posts flooding platforms, demanding their return.

The Potato Cakes were last seen last summer during a limited-time run. Twin Peaks actor, Kyle MacLachan was even featured in a campaign announcing their return.

And return they have, again and again, but usually just as a limited-time offer. This constant cycle of availability and disappearance has fueled the fervor, creating a near-mythical status for the humble Potato Cake. And now, we have word that the Potato Cakes are being brought back, again…except this time they aren’t leaving because they will be a permanent menu addition forevermore.

Chief marketing officer Jeff Baker said in an email:

After the overwhelming excitement from our fans following the brief return of Potato Cakes in July 2024, it was clear how much our guests truly missed them. We constantly get calls, messages, and comments on social media about Potato Cakes. Since we’re in the business of making Arby’s fans happy, bringing Potato Cakes back was a no brainer for us. It is a small way we can show appreciation to our guests for their passion and loyalty. Potato Cakes are permanently back, and we couldn’t be more excited to enjoy them together once again.”

In fact, they’re putting their money where their mouth is and launching a pre-class action lawsuit that promises to pay customers $1 million worth of Arby’s food if the Potato Cakes are ever to disappear ever again:

Bringing back Potato Cakes permanently could be a significant win for Arby’s. It taps into a passionate customer base, adds a unique and beloved item to the menu, and generates positive buzz. In a competitive fast-food landscape, these little wins can make a big difference.

While nothing is truly “permanent” in the ever-evolving world of fast food, the signs are promising. It appears that Arby’s has recognized the enduring popularity of Potato Cakes and is finally giving them the permanent place they deserve.

It’s $2.69 for two cakes, $2.99 for three, and $3.49 for four.
