O’FALLON, MO — A Doordash delivery driver in Missouri was shot in the stomach after mistakenly bringing an order to the wrong house.

According to police, the incident happened on July 7th around 12:30am. The driver was delivering a food order when they approached the wrong house and dropped the order at the door. The driver then realized he delivered to the wrong house, and went back to retrieve the order. That was when homeowner, Dwayne Jones confronted him, and shot the delivery driver in the stomach.

Police believe Dwayne Jones, may have mistaken the driver for someone else or thought they were attempting a break-in.

Detective Carl Cunningham in the probable cause statement said:

Dwayne Jones approached the victim while still in his driveway, and shot the victim one time in the abdominal area. The victim was located laying down in the residential driveway by responding officers. Witnesses applied life-saving measures. The victim was then rushed to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, and immediately taken into surgery.”

After the shooting, the driver was in the driveway with witnesses attempting to assist him. Paramedics arrived on the scene and performed life-saving measures.

Prosecuting attorney for St. Charles County, Joe McCulloch, said:

He’s still in the hospital; he’s gone through a number of surgeries already and he’s still in very, very critical condition… In this situation, I don’t think the driver did anything to warrant this kind of action.”

Jones has a past criminal history which prompted the court to hold him without bond. He has been charged with assault in the first degree and armed criminal action. His court appearance is scheduled and the St. Charles County Prosecutor’s Office said they will advocate for no change to Jones being held without bond at the hearing.

DoorDash released a statement on the incident, “We are deeply shocked and horrified by this senseless act of violence. There is no excuse or justification for what happened, and we are fully supporting law enforcement with their investigation. Our immediate concern is the wellbeing of the Dasher, and we continue to pray for his recovery. We are ready to offer him assistance through our occupational accident insurance and are trying to contact his family and loved ones.”

Doordash says they have safety measures in place for drivers including a partnership with ADT on the Dashers’ app which gives Dasher’s a safety reassurance call, an emergency assist button, SafeDash check-in, real-time safety alerts, and more.
