Rapid City, South Dakota – A 44-year-old man named Pedro Simental appeared in court on Monday for an evidentiary hearing for allegedly beating a woman to death with a can of beans after she ripped his Denver Broncos jersey.

The victim, 40-year-old Edlayah Little was picked up by an ambulance this past November at the Stardust Motel after an unknown person called 911. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced deadshortly thereafter. Hospital staff reported “suspicious injuries” including blunt force trauma.

Simental was initially questioned by police on the night of the incident but during a follow-up interview on Nov 13th, he admitted to getting into an argument with Little that turned into a physical altercation after she ripped his shirt.

The Rapid City Journal reported that during the court proceedings on Monday, Simonal’s defense contended that Little’s death resulted from pre-existing medical conditions and not blunt force trauma caused by the can of beans.

Simonal’s lawyer argued for access to ten years of Little’s medical records so he could prove that a hematoma, a blood clot that formed in the brain is believed to be the cause of death, and could have stemmed from Little’s history of alcohol abuse rather than a blow to the head.

The defense cited Little as being a “severe alcoholic.” They also argued that one of the state’s doctors said Little’s hematoma was “spontaneous.”

The prosecution’s medical professionals disagree, asserting the head trauma inflicted by the can directly caused the fatal hematoma.

Judge Joshua Hendrickson granted access to five years of medical history, deeming it sufficient for the defense’s case. Simonal’s next court date is set for August 26th. If convicted he faces a $50,000 fine and a maximum sentence of life in prison.
