Craving a classic McDonald’s experience without breaking the bank? The fast-food giants answer is bringing a value option into the scene: the $5 meal. This budget-friendly option is only sticking around for a month.

Starting June 25th, the $5 Value Meal will be available.

McDonald’s said in a statement to CNBC: “We know how much it means to our customers when McDonald’s offers meaningful value and communicates it through national advertising. That’s been true since our very beginning and never more important than it is today.

In response to McDonald’s deal – rival, Burger King has fast-tracked their own $5 Meal except the King’s will be active for months compared to the clowns paltry four week availability.

In a memo, sent by Burger King’s U.S. and Canada President Tom Curtis, and reported by Bloomberg:

Regardless of their plans, we are moving full speed ahead with our own plans to launch our own $5 value meal before they do − and run it for several months.”

McDonald’s disappointingly has no response to this move, in fact, they have no plans to one up BK’s $5 Meal Deal. And they’re sticking fast to their deals limited availability which is a letdown to say the least.

$5 Value Meal Contents

For a limited time you can score a McDonald’s meal for just five bucks. The $5 meal features your choice of two iconic menu items:

  • a McChicken sandwich or a McDouble cheeseburger
  • One 4-pc Chicken Nugget
  • French fries (size unknown)
  • One drink (size unknown)

The new McDonald’s Value Meal brings to mind Wendy’s Biggie Bag which contains nuggets, choice of a burger or chicken sandwich and fries. Wendy’s has several tiers of the Biggie Bag available starting at $5 or $6 depending on the location.

The option is popular among Wendy’s fans which is why it’s become a permanent addition. The decision to bring the $5 Value Meal on board for a month is an odd move on McDonald’s part. Perhaps they’re testing the waters to see if the meal is successful before taking permanent residence on the menu?

This promotion comes as McDonald’s, like many restaurants, faces mounting problems retaining customers as prices rise and portions shrink. Budget-conscious diners are looking for ways to stretch their dollar and that has translated into less stops at fast food restaurants and more people cooking dinner at home. The $5 meal reintroduces a value option, a hopeful tactic to entice customers back through the golden arches.

John Palmaccio, McDonald’s owner and operator and chair of the Operators National Advertising Fund, said in a statement to CNBC on the $5 promotion: “Great value and affordability have always been a hallmark of McDonald’s brand, and all three legs of the stool are coming together to deliver that at a time when our customers really need it. This is the power and promise of the Golden Arches.”

While details are still emerging, the month-long promotion suggests McDonald’s is testing the waters. If the $5 meal proves popular, it could potentially become a more permanent fixture on the menu.
