Popeyes, is spicing things up with testing of a brand-new sandwich: the Signature Hot Crispy Chicken Sandwich. It is reportedly being rolled out this summer in Nashville, TN under what they’re calling a “soft launch”. And if things go as planned, we can expect to see this across the country sometime in the near future.

The fiery offering comes on the heels of the popularity of their original Spicy Chicken Sandwich, which ignited the “Chicken Sandwich War” back in 2019. It looks like Popeyes is throwing their hat into the Spicy sandwich ring again, hoping for a another take-off.

How is the Hot Crispy Chicken Sandwich Different?

The Signature Hot Crispy Chicken Sandwich features a crispy, marinated, and hand-battered chicken breast similar to the classic but the difference lies in the sauce.

This new sandwich completely does away with the mayo and replaces it with a signature hot sauce which offers a spicier alternative to the creamy spicy mayo on the original. The sandwich comes complete with the chain’s signature barrel-cured pickles for a tangy contrast.

For those seeking an extra layer of flavor, Popeyes is also testing a deluxe version of the hot sandwich which adds bacon and Havarti cheese to the mix.

While details are scarce, the test appears to be underway at select Popeyes locations in Tennesse. This limited rollout will gauge the customer response with the added ability to refine the recipe before a potential wider release.

Popeye’s also investigated a lineup of chicken sandwiches in October during a partnership with the hot sauce brand, Truff. After a period of testing, they launched the line nationwide. The sandwiches all used a spicy mayo created by Truff for a total of eight different versions. There wasn’t much fanfare for this Truff version, and they made a soft blip on chicken sandwich fanatics radar.

We’ll be awaiting further information on the Signature Hot Crispy Chicken Sandwich, and when/if they plan on launching it across the US. With the original sandwich’s legacy, the potential for a hotter and bolder version is on the table. If the test goes off without a hitch, Popeyes might have another winner on their hands, leading to another fiery chapter in the ongoing fast-food chicken sandwich wars.
