In Pizza Hut’s latest creation, East meets West… in a turtle-style extravaganza. The chain’s Taiwan arm has launched the “Stuffed Crust Double Filling Mugwort Mochi Turtle Pizza,” a mouthful in every sense.
It debuts officially on March 24th, but the chain has been taking pre-orders since the 19th for customers that want some of that mutant action.
The unique pizza takes inspiration from both classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle imagery and Taiwanese culinary traditions. It’s shaped like a turtle, complete with a red bean paste filling, a nod to the sweet “cao zai guo” dumplings popular in Taiwan.
What Is A Mochi Turtle Pizza?
The turtle-shaped pizza has a red bean and cheese filling but the toppings are where this thing gets really interesting. The turtle’s “shell” is made with mugwort mochi, a chewy rice cake infused with the herb mugwort. Then, for a topper Cilantro adds a fresh touch. The whole thing is finished off with tater tots lining the turtles outer shell.
Some employees have already voiced their frustration on social media regarding the complexity of preparing the pizza during peak hours. It’s also experiencd some criticism from customers, mainly with the finished appearance, and how long it takes to make:
“The turtle took 10 minutes to cook and it can only be said to look like a frog that was stoned to death.”
This pizza is a limited-edition offering in Taiwan, available for pre-order from March 20th to 23rd, 2024, with deliveries starting on March 24th.
Whether you love it or hate it, Pizza Hut Taiwan’s mochi turtle pizza is definitely something to experience, if only once. It didn’t doesn’t just takev steps…it leaps well off well-trodden path of pepperoni and sausage.
