Spring has sprung in Japan, and to celebrate the arrival of cherry blossom season, Domino’s Japan has unveiled a unique offering: the Sakura Pizza. This limited-edition pizza blends sweet and savory flavors, capturing the essence of “hanami,” the Japanese tradition of enjoying the fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms.
The interesting pizza will be available until March 31st, and combines several unlikely elements like Tapioca, mozzarella cheese and condensed milk to create a dessert-style pizza mixed with regular-style pizza.
Sakura Pizza & Sakura Mozzarella Balls
The Sakura Pizza features a base of classic Domino’s dough topped with a generous layer of mozzarella cheese infused with condensed milk for a touch of sweetness. This layer is then adorned with vibrant pink, strawberry-flavored tapioca balls (490 yen ordered by themselves) reminiscent of the delicate cherry blossoms.
But the unique elements don’t stop there. The crust itself is ingeniously stuffed with a delightful combination of sakura-flavored chocolate and cheese, offering a subtle floral note and a burst of creamy sweetness with every bite. The pizza is finished with a dusting of powdered sugar, adding a touch of whimsical charm to the entire experience.
Domino’s Japan understands the cultural significance of hanami, and the Sakura Pizza goes beyond just being a unique menu item. The company has also introduced a special “Sakura Set” that allows customers to fully embrace the cherry blossom experience.
This set (3999 yen) includes a small Sakura Pizza, Sakura Mozzarella Balls (also featuring a delightful cherry blossom twist), an additional small pizza of your choice, a side order, and a cherry blossom-patterned leisure sheet, which is a foldable plastic picnic blanket designed to be used under the beautiful canopy of blooming cherry blossoms.
The price is listed as starting at 1795 yen (or USD $12.99) and up to 4990 yen (USD $33.10).
The Sakura Pizza and Mozzarella Balls are available for a limited time only, from now until March 31st in most of Japan. For Hokkaido and the Tohoku region, where cherry blossom season arrives later, these delightful treats will be available until April 28th.
Another recent “out there” concoction dreamed up by Domino’s was the Cheese Volcano Pizza unveiled in January in Japan and Taiwan. It featured a “magma crater” in the middle filled with cheese, and was offered in several unique varieties.
If you’re in Japan and looking for a unique way to celebrate the beauty of spring, Domino’s Sakura Pizza…will definitely fit the bill.
