Krispy Kreme is reaching for the stars (or the moon technically) with their latest donut creation. To celebrate the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th, the donut giant is offering a limited-edition “Total Solar Eclipse Donut.” This isn’t the first time Krispy Kreme has gotten into the astronomical spirit; they’ve created donuts for past solar eclipses, the first in 2017, when they doused an Original Glazed donut in chocolate glaze for the event.

Dake Skena, global chief brand officer for Krispy Kreme, said in the news release on the limited-edition donuts: “Eclipses are rare and so is our out-of-this-world Total Solar Eclipse Doughnut. Even if you can’t be in the path of totality you can get in the path of these treats, which you will eat in totality.”

Krispy Kreme’s Out-of-This-World Eclipse Donut

The Krispy Kreme Total Solar Eclipse Doughnut is a delicious tribute to the upcoming celestial event on April 8th. The donut features a classic glazed base dipped in dark chocolate icing, mimicking the moon’s shadow. Silver sprinkles represent the starry night sky, and a swirl of buttercream frosting with Oreo cookie pieces representing the outermost layer of the sun’s atmosphere.

To complete the cosmic theme, what other garnishment than an Oreo cookie would be fit to sit atop the donut? The Oreo symbolizes the complete blockage of the sun during totality.

A solar eclipse is a rare phenomenon that occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and Earth, casting a shadow on our planet. During a total solar eclipse, the moon completely blocks the sun’s light for a brief period, creating a darkness in the path of totality. This path is a narrow band on Earth’s surface, and only those within this zone will experience the complete darkness.

For those outside the path of totality, a partial eclipse can still be observed, where the moon appears to take a bite out of the sun. Before you look up, note that viewing any eclipse requires special eye protection to avoid permanent eye damage.

Sonic is also getting in on the eclipse celebration. The drive-thru chain launched a Blackout Slush Float ahead of the event on March 25th. And it actually comes with a special pair of eclipse viewing glasses. Like Krispy Kreme’s Eclipse Donut, Sonic fashioned their float to capture all of the visual elements of the eclipse in a cup.

Customers will have from April 5th to April 8th to grab a box of the celestial-inspired donuts.

If you’re lucky enough to be in the path of totality or just want to celebrate this astronomical marvel, Krispy Kreme’s Total Solar Eclipse Doughnut is a delicious way to get in on the cosmic fun.
