A sad tale of an orphaned baby squirrel that lost his mother and sibling, turned into a tale of triumph when the little fella found himself rescued, and adopted by a family who just so happened upon him outside their home.

Now two years later, the Victoria’s have friend squirrel named, Dale that lives in their yard inside of a house that they built to be modeled after a Whataburger restaurant.

It started when the family were alerted by their cat meowing in their yard. Father Keith Morgan alongside his daughter, Riley, followed their cat who led them to two baby squirrels. And not far from the baby squirrels, was the mother laying in the street.

The heartbreaking situation had the babies mother-less, and the family felt responsible for taking them into their care, ultimately hoping to nurse them out of babyhood until they would be ready to strike off on their own.

Unfortunately, one of the baby squirrels didn’t make it shortly after rescue but Dale ending up flourishing.

“Little by little he would go up in a tree, climb up to play, and then come back down to stick around with us,” Keith said. “We said, ‘OK. If he wants to stick around. We’ll build him a house in the trees.’ She’s a big Whataburger fan and we decided to channel that into the home.”

Using the fast food restaurant exterior of Whataburger as inspiration, the family got to work building him a little house for a safe haven. It took two days, and Dale took to his new “digs” immediately.

Over time, Dale ventured further into the wild but would always return to the Victoria’s yard, and his Whatburger home…even two years after they rescued him. He still approaches the family, no doubt thankful for the connection they made with him.

We love the tales that have a good ending
