McDonald’s Japan arm has put out two new dipping sauces intended as a companion for Chicken McNuggets in time for the Holiday season. The Lobster Butter Sauce, and the Black Truffle Sauce.

The limited-edition sauces will available until December 25th. Both sauces have been available at McDonald’s in Japan once in the past, in 2018 when they first came on the scene.

The butter-based Lobster Sauce has notes of butter, and lobster with garlic, onion, light soy sauce, and then there’s a non-disclosed secret ingredient.

The Black Truffle Sauce is a steak-based sauce that has a tomato-paste, soy sauce base. It’s seasoned with black pepper, garlic, black truffle, and sautéed onions.

Japan locations also returned two customer favorites to the menu on November 29th, the Gratin Croquette Burger, and the Rich Beef Hayashi Gratin Croquette Burger. The Gratin Croquette Burger (otherwise known as the Gurakoru) is a staple at McDonald’s during the cold season. It was first introduced in 1993, and the burger is an interesting one, not even containing a beef patty at all. It’s a croquette with pasta, shrimp, and white sauce inside of the middle, and it has a spicy egg-based sauce, with shredded cabbage to top it off. Everything sits inside of a soft, fluffy bun to tie it together.

The new sauces are reserved for McDonald’s in Japan at this time. A few months ago, McDonald’s in the United States released two sauces, the Mango Sauce, and the Spicy Jam. The latter being more of a breakfast-esque sauce.

Tariq Hassan, Customer Experience Officer for McDonald’s US said in a statement on the new sauces:

“We get inspiration for the food our fans love by exploring the incredible tastes and flavors found in communities across the country.”

Customers love having new dipping sauces to choose from but they don’t love paying for them. The general rule is that for every order of a 4 or 5-piece McNugget, you get one sauce for free. If you want additional sauces, you generally have to pay a small fee. It’s usually up to the discretion of the employee serving them.

With a new season in full-swing maybe new dipping sauces are coming down the pipeline for countries other than Japan…
