Fast food is known for its convenience, low price, and often, its less-than-healthy ingredients. Over the years, many fast food chains have pushed the boundaries of traditional cuisine in the quest for the next big thing, often resulting in some rather unique and questionable menu items.
Here’s a look at the top 12 most disgusting fast food menu items of all time, in no specific order.
McDonald’s McLobster
This was McDonald’s attempt to bring the taste of the New England lobster roll to the masses. Unfortunately, the fast-food interpretation of this delicacy was widely criticized for its lackluster taste and questionable texture. The plug was pulled on the McLobster after it’s abysmal performance, and supply issues.
Burger King’s Halloween Whopper
While a black burger might be visually striking, many customers reported that the black bun, colored with A1 sauce and food coloring, caused their fecal to turn green, leading to a lot of unpleasant disgust. If that’s not disgusting, we don’t know what is!
KFC’s Double Down
This “sandwich” replaced the traditional bread with two pieces of fried chicken, that sandwiched bacon and cheese. For many, the over-the-top nature of this dish crossed the line from indulgence into revulsion.
Pizza Hut’s Hot Dog Stuffed Crust Pizza
This pizza had a crust stuffed with an entire ring of mini hot dogs. The resulting pizza was a visually, unappealing mess. The combination of pizza, and hot dogs is hopefully something that Pizza Hut never returns to again.
Taco Bell’s Waffle Taco
Part of their breakfast menu, this item was a waffle bent into the shape of a taco, filled with sausage and scrambled eggs. Many found the sweet and savory combination off-putting. The item looked nothing like advertising pictures either. A soggy waffle? Charred sausage? And a spoonful of eggs? Nope, we’ll pass on this one!
Dunkin’ Donuts’ Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich
This sandwich combined a split glazed donut with bacon, and a pepper fried egg. The sweet and salty combination, along with the extremely high calorie count, was not a hit with many consumers.
Hardee’s Monster Thickburger
This burger contained two 1/3 pound beef patties, four strips of bacon, three slices of cheese, and mayonnaise. The sheer size and unhealthiness of this burger made it more disgusting than appetizing for many.
Starbucks’ Unicorn Frappuccino
This brightly colored, super sweet drink was made with a pink powder, sour blue drizzle, and topped with vanilla whipped cream. Many found the combination of colors and extreme sweetness to be too much. The barista’s even took a stand against it, as making it was an absolute nightmare. They renamed it the Frap From Hell.
Jack in the Box’s Bacon Milkshake
This limited-time offer was a part of the “Marry Bacon” campaign. It was a standard vanilla milkshake with bacon-flavored syrup mixed in. Many people found the combination of sweet and smoky gross, and just plain weird.
Arby’s Meat Mountain
This sandwich included every type of meat that Arby’s serves, stacked high and topped with two slices of cheese. The overwhelming amount of meat was ridiculous for many consumers. And it looked absolutely unappetizing. Here’s an idea: Let’s throw together a mountainous pile of mystery meat and call it a sandwich! Nah, it looked like road kill.
McDonald’s McSpaghetti
This unappealing looking ‘dish’ was tried out by McDonald’s in the 70’s and 80’s. The gross plop of bland spaghetti in a styrofoam container understandably did nothing for, anyone. McDonald’s kicked it out the back door but It still lives on internationally in Italy, and the Philippines.
Burger King’s Whopperito
Just a Whopper in a tortilla, minus a few ingredients (a few important ingredients). Common complaints included that the innards didn’t quite fill out the tortilla…which resulted in dry pockets of nothing but tortilla. A dry, bland experience to say the least.
While some of these items may have been a little ambitious, and horribly implemented, they certainly made an impact. Fortunately for us, fast food chains are always looking for ways to stand out, even if it means creating menu items that many of us find disgusting. Who knows what they’ll come up with next?
