Burger King went from an April Fool’s Day tease to a cult favorite with the launch of the so-called “Fake Burger” in Japan. Initially announced for an April 1st release, many dismissed the idea of a burger filled entirely with French fries as a joke. But Burger King surprised everyone by confirming, yes it was a real menu item.

This isn’t the Fake Burger’s first rodeo in Japan. Believe it or not, there was a previous iteration unveiled back in October 2020. That version featured just fries and a meat sauce, according to Brand Eating.

The Fake Burger Launch

The 2024 version takes things up a notch. The deceivingly named burger packs a punch with seasoned fries, smoky Bull’s-Eye BBQ sauce, and two slices of Gouda cheese, all between a standard burger bun. At around $2.50, it’s a cheap option for culinary adventure-seeking customers.

The Fake Burger’s success has social media abuzzing with US fans being particularly envious, calling for the Fake Burger to make its way stateside. Imagine what this thing could do with a char-broiled patty?

A Gimmick Or The Real Deal?

Other similarly wacky King creations have launched internationally over the past two years including the Real Cheeseburger in Thailand which featured two buns and about 20 slices of cheese as the only component. Then there was the Real Pickle Burger which consisted of yes, you guessed it…mounds and mounds of pickles. If you think about it, these gimmicks are kind of genius because they do get customers in the door to see what all the fuss is about.

So many questions…will the Fake Burger will become a permanent fixture in Japan or a limited-time novelty? And will it ever launch in the US? Let us know in the comments if you would try the Fake Burger!
