Chick’n Impossible: Burger King debuts plant-based patties at select locations

Burger King’s limited release of the new Impossible Chick’n Sandwich hit select locations in Cincinnati late last month. The mission? Give die-hard vegetarians a healthier alternative to Burger King’s classic Original Chicken Sandwich. Initial taste tests compare the meat-free fare with the taste and texture of the chain’s original chicken nuggets. The question is whether they’ll be popular enough with patrons to go nationwide.

Burger King’s Impossible Lineup

The fast food chain’s partnership with Impossible Foods continues to churn out plant-based versions of their most popular products. The endeavor started with the Impossible Whopper in 2019 and quickly expanded to breakfast and side options. The items have struggled to catch on with BK fanatics, with the Impossible Whopper the sole survivor of initial trials.

The practical limitations of preparing meatless alternatives on the same grills as the rest of Burger King’s standard fair pose a significant problem. Impossible Food is known for creating high-quality vegan alternatives to poultry and beef, but while the Impossible Whopper and Impossible Chick’n Sandwich can be ordered with mayo, neither can truly be considered vegan options due to cross-contamination. That’s not an issue for locations that have already gone vegan, like Madrid’s Vurger King.

Keep your eyes peeled for more vegetarian and vegan options offered by the chain in the future.
