Things got a bit spicy online when music producer Benny Blanco, (most commonly known as Selena Gomez’s boyfriend), shared his thoughts on Jollibee, a popular Filipino fast food chain.
Let’s just say, his review wasn’t exactly a five-star rating because as it turns out, Benny wasn’t a huge fan and his comments sparked a firestorm on social media, especially among Jollibee’s devoted following.
Filipino food fans weren’t happy, with some feeling his critique disrespected the entire food culture. Interestingly enough, Blanco even prefaces the video with how his stepmom is from the Philippines, and he grew up on a “****load of Flipino food”, so he’s obviously well-versed in their culture and food.
In his TikTok video, an unkept-seeming, @Bennyblanco, conducts his taste-testing similarly to a slob, shoving rice into his mouth from his hand:
“Look at this adobo rice. Look at this dry ass adobo rice.”
And just like that, the tone of the video is set. He then takes a drumstick, and dips it into the gravy. He comments that the gravy may be duping him, covering for the bland taste of the chicken.
The lemonade is the next to be tested, and in between spastic sips of the drink, he takes another drumstick and dips it into the lemonade.
Now this is where it gets really interesting, Blanco takes a bite of spaghetti, and promptly spits it back out, dramatically:
“All right, this s*** smells like f***ing vomit. “What the f***? Let me get a fork. Wait. I feel like that just ruined my night.”
He continues trashing each item tested, and then things escalated quickly. The internet, as it tends to do, went into overdrive. Memes popped up, comments flew, and Benny found himself facing the wrath of the Jollibee faithful.
The top comment? “Benny your literal review about Jollibee is my literal review of you 🥲”. The comment received 128,000k likes.
But wait, there’s more! When Benny realized things got a little out of hand (kind of like how when Wendy’s walked back their surge pricing), he later clarified his statements with a follow-up video, giving a thumbs up to Jollibee’s fried chicken sandwich. A definite damage control attempt.
So, what can we learn from this whole Jollibee situation? That Benny’s review didn’t land well, Jollibee fans weren’t having it, and a lesson was (hopefully) learned about the power of the internet and watching what you say… because you never know who’s watching.
