Taco Bell is taking a deeper dip into the breakfast game by testing the waters with a new side dish called Breakfast Tater Tots.

Starting last week, Taco Bell began testing the Breakfast Tater Tots exclusively in Chicago for the time being. The chain will likely test these for a few months to garner reactions before dropping them at locations across the board.

What are Breakfast Tater Tots?

The tots are modeled after the chains typical nacho fare but rely on tater tots instead of chips as a base. The tots are topped with breakfast slated toppings like; scrambled eggs, a medley of mozzarella, pepper jack, and cheddar cheese, and finished off with either bacon or sausage.

The price point on these bad boys stands in the range of $3.49-4.49 depending on which meat option is ordered.

Taco Bell said about the Breakfast Tots, “They were a regional offering introduced in the mid ’90s and exited menus in the early 2000s to allow room for us to create even more craveable creations for fans.”

As it turns out, the chain briefly offered tots for the first time in the 90’s under the name Mexi-Nuggets but removed them from the menu in the early millennium.

Taco Bell has been on a testing frenzy over the past new months, trying out new item after new item in different markets to get consumers opinions before a possible nationwide launch. There’s also the Crispy Chicken Nuggets which started testing in October for the first time in Minneapolis. The chain is out to capture a piece of the nugget-loving crowd by taking it a step above the competition, and using white meat chicken.

Additionally, Rolled Chicken Tacos, and Grilled Cheese Nacho Fries were both introduced to the menu last week. Taco Bell’s constant additions and testing of new items, keeps the chain at the forefront of fast food, while also providing value for consumers during a time when everyone is raising prices.

By adding more breakfast options, Taco Bell (known for catering to the late night crowd) is looking for a bigger share of the breakfast market. The tots are the latest to send them on their way…
