Starting today, Taco Bell is bringing back a retired item that was super popular in the 90’s, and 2000’s. Without much fanfare, the chain has brought back the Double Decker Taco for a limited run.

The Double Decker Taco has two layers of tortilla with refried beans sandwiched between the two…The hard taco shell layer is then filled with cheddar cheese, lettuce, and beef. Another version available includes the addition of tomatoes, and sour cream.

It was brought to the menu for the first time in 1995 and stayed on the menu for a good fourteen years until it was taken off the menu in 2019.

Then last year, the last we heard about the Double Decker Taco, it was in the running for a return to the menu in an in-app voting promo.

Taco Bell started a marketing campaign in 2022 where fans could vote for the return of one of two discontinued items. The first vote was between the Enchirito, and the Double Decker Taco with the Enchirito taking the vote. Then last spring, another vote was cast between the Beefy Crunch Burrito, and the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos Tacos. The Cool Ranch Doritos won out on the second round for a temporary resurrection nationwide.

So the Double Decker Taco is being rolled out under the radar this time around, and there’s a buy one get one free deal active from December 5th-10th.

Taco Bell’s Double Decker Taco is making its way back to the national menu starting today for a limited time. The Double Decker – a bean-filled tortilla wrapped around a taco shell and filled with beef, lettuce and shredded cheddar cheese – will be available for $2.99, or as a Double Decker Supreme, with added diced tomatoes and reduced-fat sour cream, for $3.69.

The Double Decker was initially introduced as a limited-time offer in 1995 before becoming a permanent item in June 2006. It was discontinued in 2019. In 2022, the item was up against the Enchirito in Taco Bell’s in-app Fan Favorite Voting experience to earn a spot back on the menu, but the Enchirito prevailed. The Double Decker, however, garnered 38% of the vote and was heavily requested from fans during a Reddit Ask Me Anything session earlier this year, inspiring its return.

CM, Tom Montgomery said about the return:

“The Double Decker Taco holds a deep space in the hearts of our Taco Bell Fans. The insane amount of love for this product from fans across our social platforms was impossible to ignore. The sentiment was particularly strong following last year’s spirited face-off with the Enchirito. We listened to what our fans wanted from us and knew we couldn’t deny them the joy of the Double Decker Taco any longer.”
