Is This The End Of Free Refills At McDonald’s?

The promise of endless soda refills has long been a cornerstone of the McDonald’s experience. In light of the news that the fast-food giant has been phasing out all of its self-serve soda fountains, is the future of this perk hanging in the balance, about to go extinct?

The move away from self-serve stations has been part of a larger McDonald’s remodeling initiative. Citing efficiency and potential sanitation concerns, the company has been transitioning to a crew-serve only model, where employees fill drinks behind the counter. While many locations have already begun this shift, the complete rollout is expected by the end of 2024…a lot sooner than the originally anticipated date of 2032.

The End Of Free Refills?

Now we’re hearing reports of a more alarming trend. No more free refills. A quick search of the ol’ internet warehouse shows a disturbing trend of customers pointing out that free refills are a thing of the past at many locations across the country.

Usually free refills were obtained through the self-serve stations, allowing customers to control their desired soda-to-ice ratio and top-up whenever they pleased. For many customers it offered the incentive they needed to get in the door.

One Reddit thread started last week in the r/Shrinkflation subreddit said, “They removed the drink station at my local McDonald’s. No more free refills, you have to buy a 2nd drink now if you want more.”

Another user pointed out: “Soda is one of their most profitable items. It costs them pennies. The cups cost more than the drink.”

Now the question is, do they still offer free refills if you go to the counter and ask an employee? Someone else answered that very question: “No. When my local did this switch they said no refills at all, chain wide.”

McDonald’s has yet to officially announce its policy on refills under the new system and it will likely be up to the franchise owner’s discretion if refills will still be offered, perhaps upon request in some areas. It kind of seems unlikely because employee-served refills would lead to longer wait times and that doesn’t seem like a road McDonald’s would travel down.

All Good Things Must Come To An End

Another interesting fact is that free refills appear to only have been a thing in the US while other countries have never had the option at McDonald’s. Not the justification we were looking for but still an interesting fact.
